Prasanthi Nilayam - Heaven on Earth...Part 1

Sri Sathya Sai Baba needs no introduction to his devotees and non devotees alike. But a few non devotees may be keen to know more about Him and the place where his ashram is Viz. Puttaparthi aka Prasanthi Nilayam. There is an enormous amount of information on the internet about Sri Sathya Sai Baba and the service projects of Sri Sathya Sai Trust. However the following extract from the official website of Sri Sathya Sai trust  characterizes beautifully in a nutshell who He is and what He stands for :

"His numerous service projects, be it free hospitals, free schools and colleges, free drinking water supply or free housing projects, all stand testimony to His selfless love and compassion for the needy and less privileged. True to His declaration - “My Life is My Message”, He has inspired and continues to inspire millions of His devotees worldwide by His personal example to live the ideal that service to man is service to God. The Sri Sathya Sai Organization today has a presence in over 167 countries in the world and members undertake group service activities that benefit their immediate community"

Visit the the official website of the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust for more details.

The purpose of this post is to give a glimpse of Puttaparthi. I was fortunate to have been in this great place during Nov 19-24 this year (2010), to witness the celebrations of 85th Birthday of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. I had captured the carnivel like atmosphere and the happenings thru my camera for relaying it to my friends and fellow devotees back home..One of my friends who keenly follows my travel posts had a look at these pictures/videos and suggested  that I should blog post it..He said that he enjoyed viewing them all and opined will be of interest to all to see more of this place. Hence it is here..!

Hope you find them interesting..and as with any blogger, it would gladden me to know if it is interesting to you ...So take a second to comment and let me know what you think... !

As usual, almost all details about Puttaparthi can be found in wikipedia. ( a competitor for us ..bloggers..this wikipedia (lol.!)..A complementor truly, I love wikipedia...!). I've just given a few details below based on my knowledge that could be useful for new  visitors from South India.

Puttaparthi can be easily reached from Bangalore (about 160kms). Numerous buses ply from Bangalore.
There are two APSRTC buses direct to Puttaparthi from Chennai first one starting at 8pm and another at 8:30pm from Koyambedu bus stand. I do not think there is an online booking for this. ( I need to check it out). There is a week-end special train from Chennai that departs at about 10:30pm on every Fri and reaches Puttaparthi the next day at 10:30am. On week days there are a number of trains to Bangalore from Chennai. There is a daily train (Guntur Passenger) from Yeswantpur @8:30am to Guntur that goes via Sai Prasanthi Nilayam Station (Puttaparthi). Yeswantpur junction is at about 8km from Bangalore. Local trains and autos are available.
The ashram is just opposit to the bus stand but is at about 8kms from the railway station and autos, share autos, buses are availble from the railway station.
There are a number of lodges, hotels available in Puttaparthi and numerous houses and flats have been covereted to lodges where one gets a room for Rs 150 a day. But generally the hotels are expensive during festivities. Festivals of all relegions are important here.. and so is crowded during all festivals.
Guru poornima is an auspecious day here and attracts large number of devotees from all over the world.
Of course Nov 23, the birth day of Sri Sathya Sai baba attracts lakhs of deveotees from all over the globe... Celebrations of which I was fortunate enough to witness this year (2010).
Many devotees who regularly visit, own an accommodation (flat) in Puttaparthi that they use when visiting this great place.
I used to stay in Sai Brindavan Hotel which is a kind of  mid of the way budget hotel ,a double room (a/c) costs about Rs 1200/- a day and Non A/C Rs 800/-.I like the spacious rooms here..You need to inspect and choose one..!.I was lucky to get hold of a house of one of my relatives during this visit without which I doubt if I would have ventured into this trip during the Birth day..
Food is available inside ashram at subsidised rates.. There is a south indian canteen, a North Indian canteen and one for Westerners..apart from a few Coffee Kiosks..and snack counters.. all operated by the trust.

Google will throw up a number of  links to get all sorts of details of this great place.

These are captures (Photos and Videos) of this place are during the festivities of the 85th Birth day celebrations.I have listed them in a logical order of the happenings to give a sense of cogency and a feeling of taking a virtual tour..!
I know, as usual, there are lot of Pictures and videos in my post and require lot of time to go through. But, you will find them useful if and when you decide to visit this great place..! With this background I will leave it to the pictures and Videos to do the talking..!

A word of caution with respect to the number of photographs. I actually uploaded all photos every night from Puttaparthi during my stay to share them with others as soon as possible. So I had little time editing-selecting which to post..etc.. So there may be some duplicates that I would not have removed ...I tried deleting some from the web albums later, but realized it is not only  not worth doing it..but also each photo was subtly different in some sense..So left them as it is...But some of the albums may contain a huge number of photos..Bear with me...!

Before starting with my main picture story I want to post the picture of  Sai Kulwant hall where Sri Sathya Sai Baba gives Darshan to thousands of devotees every day...Sitting there, I used to wonder, is this how Indra Sabha will look like ? This truley magnificent hall always inspires me..and whoever has sat in it will endorse my view..!

I can understand your curiosity and will be too happy to take you along with me.

Where are these thousands of devotees heading to..?

Devotees-Wave Every where- PHOTOS

I am glad I did not carry my DSLR that day in this crowd....least I would have found it difficult to hold it securely..!

All roads lead to Hillview stadium on 23rd November..Where the climax of the birthday celebrations was going to take place..! Thousands formed bee-line right from 2am in the morning to get a vantage location inside the Stadium.

Foriegn Devotees enjoy the music

Hariharan,Unni Krishnan, Shankar Mahadevan were some of the prominant singers who lead the music troop on the occasion. Any one of these singers, alone,  is enough to create waves..if they join hands rather voices...one can imagine the power of their tune..Not even westerners were exceptions to it..See them enjoying the music..!
The person who claps in this video is a Writer,Play wright,Stage director, publicist from the Republic of Azerbaijan. He was sitting next to me in the stadium. He got me to shoot a video clip of his making some speech. That is covered as the second portion of this video... I can't understand what he speaks..Anyone who knows Russian can translate it for me..!
He said that he is covering this celebration on behalf of a magazine and he collected tons of photos and videos from me for his work. He said he would send me his work..!

Hope you too enjoyed the trip with me..! Let's meet soon in another virtual tour..!

Prasanthi Nilayam - Heaven on Earth...Part 6 - Around Puttaparthy

The first and foremost place to have a look at in Puttaparthi is the Sri Sathya Super Specialty Hospital(rather temple). Spic and Span, the ambiance of the temple resembles the inner most Sanctum Sanctorum of a a temple. One can sense the divine vibrations inside..
Click here for more details on the Sathya Sai Medical Care.

After Medi-care, Educare is of foremost importance and the Sri Sathya Sai Baba has addressed this as well.

Schools,Music College, Indoor Stadium, Planatorium are situated along the main road that leads one from Ashram to the railway station within a Kilometer from the Ashram.

Prasanthi Nilayam - Heaven on Earth...Part 5 - Chaitanya Jothi

This Museum showcasing  Hindu Culture and Heritage was constructed to commemorate Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's 75th birthday. The architecture represents a fusion of different cultures and architecture forms like Chinese Roofs, Gothic Arches and Moorish Domes.
Thematically arranged artifacts and displays take you back into the history..Reminded me of Akshar Dham (Delhi).
Towards the end, there is a small Mini-Cinema hall where a 20 min video of Sri Sai baba's teachings is shown. I liked the video.

Cameras are not allowed inside and cell phones need to be switched off before entering the museum. There is a cloak room that keeps your camera safe.

The Hill View stadium is just adjacent to Chaitanya Jothi. This is where there was a huge congregation of devotees and dignitaries to celebrate the birthday on 23rd November.

Both Hill view stadium and the Chaitanya Jothi can be seen in the video in Karpagavritcham post. However for convenience it is provided here as well.

Prasanthi Nilayam - Heaven on Earth...Part 4 - Karpaga Vritcham

The above tree known as Karpaga Vritcham is on a small hillock near Chitravathi Rivar. This is at a  walkable distance from the Ashram.
Karpaga Vritcham is supposed to be a divine tree that has powers to bestow anything that is asked for.
Sri Sathya Sai baba is said to have materialized different type of fruits from this tree as per wishes of his school friends.
People believe that any wish written on a paper and tied to the branches of this tree will be fulfilled..Hence the   the leaves have given way to sheets of paper...!
Though steep , if you persevere the short climb,, you can have a breath taking view of the whole town from the hillock.Hill View stadium,School building,Chaitanya Jothi Museum, Sathya Sai University building all can be surveyed from above.. Photos and videos cover this.

Come let's climb the steps...there are colorful shops en-route...that will keep us going...! Here we go...!

Prasanthi Nilayam - Heaven on Earth...Part 3 - Prasanthi Nilayam Ashram

Having comfortably checked-in to the accommodation and taken a refreshing bath, Aren't we raring to get out into the streets.. Yes..! Let's head to The happening Place..The Prasanthi Ashram..!

Prasanthi ashram was decorated with beautiful Garlands, colorful delicate Flowers, other items of dazzling bright colors.. Decorated arches welcome you in all the inner roads..People are seen everywhere like bees...making the Carnivel atomosphere grand..! Cameras are not allowed inside the ashram in some places like the Dharshan Hall. I don't normally carry my camera inside the ashram. But this time, the pictures were allowed inside in places where there were temporary exhibits. There were prototypes of famous Hindu Temples like Mahabaleshwar Temple, Nasik Triyambageshwar temple, Manipur Krishna Temple, Delhi Jama Masjid, Sri Rangam Temple. There was also a huge towering light Garland  near the Food Pavilion that was dazzling with bright colors in the night. It was a sight to behold. Cameras were allowed at these spots and I captured all these in Photos and Short videos (given below).

I took my food almost all the days here. I din't have to wait in a queue on any occasion.. I was awe strukck by the impeccable arrangements for an occasion of such a gigantic proportion.

There was a huge shed put-up for Food Pavilion with a partition segregating the sections for Ladies and Gents separately.
So many counters are lined up and I hardly had to wait for even a minute in the queue...There was separate spaces for people who want to sit and eat and separate enclosure for people who eat the buffet standing..!
Volunteers with water cans at their back were present amidst the people and served water in their place. You don't have to walk across to fetch a glass of water.
The lunch everyday invariably had a sweet item in it.. !
Consistant Delecious Food-Impeccable arrangements...! Wow..Unforgettable experience..!.

Here we go.. Time to alight ....Gather your luggage- Make sure you've not left any of your belongings behind  in the compartment..This train goes upto Guntur..So tough to retrive things left behind..!

Prasanthi Nilayam Railway station

The entire village (not any more..It is a town with all facilities of a city!) wore a festive look and the colors of carnivel has started from the railway station itself.  Fresh paintings, Placards and Hoardings of Sayings of Sathya Sai and text from Scriptures & Sarva Dharma Embum add to the festivity and infuse a subtle and soft breeze of in-explicable Joy in the mind..!

I reached the station by about 1pm and was very hungry. Hurried to catch an auto to reach a restaurant in the town as soon as possible...I was pleasantly suprised to be greeted outside the building with sumptuous, tasty and free lunch ..served under huge shamianas..! (that you can see in the photographs below).

I must add that FREE food -3 times a day-Tea/Coffee/Milk in the morning and Evening-were served to all visitors between 15-Nov till 24-Nov inside the ashram There was an estimated figure of in excess of about 10 Lakh during this season and the the kitchen was cooking an estimated quantity of 30000 to 50000 per day ..! Saibaba Temple of Miracles

"Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata
  abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaḿ sṛjāmy aham"
Meaning: Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion — at that time I descend Myself.

All believers of Sri Shirdi SaiBaba believe that he is one such Avatar..!

There is a Shidi Sai temple near my house where the miracle of manifestation of Vibhoothi,Kumkum,Chandan (Sandal Powder)  in abundance from the statue and on the floor happen frequently.
I have been fortunate enough to witness and photograph a few of such manifestations which are given below.

I can narrate one such incidence that took place in my presence.. -I could not see it happening in real time- I was involved in the temple cleaning Seva along with fellow devotees. I just picked up a chair in front of a portrait for cleaning and when I returned after 5 minutes with the cleaned chair to secure in its place, I saw vibhoothi all over the picture...!  Any trace of small doubt in my mind vanished at that moment..!
These manifestations have become so common place here by then that I did not bother go home to bring my camera for a snap..!

Sevaral devotees have experienced miracles in their life. All accounts of such experiences have been chronicled in the form of a book and is available with the temple. Several Sai devotees and Sadhus visit this temple from time to time. Visit the temple's website for more details. http://www.srisaiviboothibaba.org

Sri Nagarajan referred to fondly as Nagaraja Baba will narrate numerous miracles performed by Sri Shirdi Baba and Sri Vibhoothi baba in his life. I have seen and Known him for over a decade. A pure and genuine soul..! He tells that references to this temple are found in Nadi (predictions written in Palm leaves..- See wikipedia for more details on Nadi astrology) and this temple will attract thousands of people..!

The address of this temple is given in their website. However I will repeat is here

Of course any of the readers can contact me on my mobile 9840462783 or mail sridharan99@gmail.com for more details about this temple and whereabouts. I will be glad to be of assistance.

Temple timings Morning 4:30 to 9AM and Evening 5 to 8:30PM. As is the case with any other Shirdi Sai temple the 4 times Aarthi takes place here as well.

One can reach the temple by train or Bus. Get down at Chromepet. Take an auto to MC Nagar Sai baba Temple. It is about 3 kms from the station and the auto should cost about Rs 40/-
One can also take an auto from Tambaram Sanatorium Station.

If you can take a bus to Hasthinapuram, it is about a KM from there and autos are aplenty from the Hasthinapuram Bus stand.

Daily Annadhanam to poor is carried out in this temple..! Thursdays-this temple will wear a festive look..!

What else would be a more fitting way to start the new year for a Sai devotee than visiting a Sai Temple...
For Chennai devotees, this temple is only a couple of hrs away..!

Thanks to Chitra whose comment in one of the posts about a Shirdi Sai temple near her residence has been a catalyst for this post..!

Om Sri Sairam..!

Jaipur - 2

This is not really a new post. I have updated my earlier post with photographs that I promised will do.
I could lay my hands on the missing photographs. Thanks to Deepak for supplying them from his archive and Thanks to Preeti for insisting on taking copies of each one's snaps at the nick of the moment, just outside the airport on the road side at 2AM in the morning...! Otherwise, we would have lost considerable part of the Jaipur photos that I accidentally deleted.

I added photos of Chokidani,Hawa Mahal,Jantar Mantar,Shopping,City Palace
Added a few photos to Jaipur around..!... Beware some poisonous snake photos in Jaipur Around album..!

In short, excepting Jai Garh fort photos and videos all others have additions..!

Hope you enjoy these additions..! Please link-up to my other post here...!

Pandari-Shirdi-Ellora Trip

I had been longing to visit Pandaripuram (Pandharpur) for quite a while. So when my wife asked me to plan a trip to Shirdi, I decided to combine Pandharpur with it. Though both of them are in the same state of Maharashtra, they are not visited together that often.
Pandharpur was close to my heart because of this story that I heard during my childhood days..!
Myself and my friend Ganeshraman made this trip with our families in Nov 2008..! (Yes there is no typo...I am just blogging some of my old visits...now...!).We had a great trip.!

I've collated the photos into a visual photostory with some soothing music to go with. Each photostory is not more than 10 minutes of duration. The photos are collated in the order of our visit and each slideshow is appropriately annotated within. I had done this earlier to share with my family friends and relatives and so I could not omit a few of our photographs in the whole story. However they are all taken in the background of the places that we visited and hence will not be radically out of place. I also do not intend to split the post based on places as I intended this to be an account of our entire trip to be experienced together..So you might find it a bit lengthy, but will give you an experience of having made the trip together.. !
If you are short of time you may want to look at the videos first before looking at the Photostory as the videos are shorter..!
The travel plan runs like this - I guess this will be useful for someone who wants to visit these places from Chennai.

Pandharpur
Wikipedia holds good amount of information on this place.
We went to Solapur from Chennai by Mumbai express. Pandharpur is 70kms from Solapur and buses ply from Solapur.Numerous autos are available from Solapur railway station to go to the bus stand.

We stayed at ISKCON at Pandharpur. We blocked a couple of twin bed rooms from Chennai by phone. The Ashram does not charge rent for the rooms...! But accept donations. The rooms are spacious with balcony overlooking river Chandrabagha.  We could see the river from our balcony that overlooked green paddy fields and the house of our boat man Pandarinath amidst this green backdrop..!  See the video below.
Caution - You don't get hot water in the room. No Geyser..!
The ISKCON is on the west bank of the river Chandrabagha while the temple and the town is on the eastern side. Boats are available to cross over at a cost of Rs 5/- Per head. We enjoyed our stay in this peaceful locale and took the boat whenever needed rather than staying amidst the thickly populated town-side.Frequent boat ride itself was an experience..!

ISKCON provides free Veg meal (very delicious) to the guests twice a day -Morning at 9:30am and Evening at 4:30pm-Yes dinner at 4:30pm and nothing after that. The ISKCON Sadhus do not eat anything after 4:30pm....! We used to go to the other side of the river and have dinner.

ISKCON houses a Radhapandarinatha temple. The krishna & Rukmani idols are of impeccable beauty. The evening Aarthi at this temple is elaborate and an exhilarating experience... with Sadhus dancing  in ecstasy..! A short video of this Aarthi can be found under Videos section below

The cute little Vittala Rukmani idols, the vast temple and grand wooden structure.. mark this temple uniquely. I understand this temple is built on a vast area and has 6 gates. The temple contains inscriptions that date back to 13th Century AD. Enormous amount of data are available on the internet about this place.
Some thing unique, I noted and liked when I visited was that in the banks of the Chandrabagha river a huge tented shamiana was erected where continuously Abhung was sung. Many devotees drop by and sing for some time before giving way to the next party. I am not an expert in music and so can not comment on the grammer of the musics... But it was so genuine and stirring that it drew me to the tent to seek these details..! I don't remember , if it was organized on account of some special occassion...! But my friend says Abhung at the Vittal Kshetram is a normal affair..!
We also visited a temple of Janabai,Thukaram famous devotees of Sri Vittala krishna. From ISKCON,the temple has to be reached by crossing the river Chandrabagha by boat and then a walk of 1 Km (Horse carts were seen for our return trip..!) On the way, We encountered a unique temple- rather a small mandapam- for Naradha in the midst of the river, half submerged.  The priest sits on the roof of the mandapam and comes down when a boat stops by..! See this interesting spot in the slideshow below.

Pandharpur VIDEOS

Shirdi
We went to Shirdi by train from Solapur to Kopergaun via Daund. The compartment is detached at Daund and attached to another train to Kopergaon. There is about 4hrs of halt at the Daund Junction.
We stayed at MTDC Hotel The Pilgrims Inn. We booked the accommodation online. Old hotel, but Spacious rooms and a decent restaurant mark the hotel uniquely..I liked it so much that I would love to stay there again...!

This Shirdi Photostory & Video covers some Shirdi sight seeing spots, the Hotel & some street shots. I could shoot a video of Dwarkamai temple with the lightings on..a video I liked much and might interest you too..!

Ellora
The cave temples of Ellora , a UNESCO world heritage site is the pinnacle of Deccan Rock Architecture.
Exquisite carvings and 150 years of hard work of nearly 7000 laborers mark these cave temples.Stupendous feat..!
The story and facts are annotated in the video.
Wikipidea will give you more information than anybody else could give you on this monument.!
Kailanasanatha temple is one of the greatest feats of all time, I would say..!

We also visited one of the Jyothirlingam temples en-route Ellora.
This temple -Grishneshwar Temple -is on the way to Ellora from Shirdi . Built by Rani Ahillyabai Holkar is an important Hindu pilgrim place located in the village of Verul, near Ellora caves. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India, where Lord Shiva is worshipped. Half a kilometre from Ellora lies this beautiful temple, built by Rani Ahillyabai Holkar, a Maratha princess. It is the most superb example of medieval temple architecture. This Jyotirlinga is said to be self - oriented. It is the last Jyotirlinga without which the journey to the Jyotirlingas is considered incomplete. The temple walls are richly sculptured. Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled Indore from 1765 to 1795, built both the temple and its masonry tank.

Jaipur

I visited Jaipur in Jul 2010 and wanted to title this post "Rajasthan" and wait for me to visit other places before giving a shape to this post. I intended this to be a catalyst for the big trip. But, the plan to visit other important places of Rajasthan did not materialize soon. For the fear of forgetting the details of my experience, I am starting to document this post.

Rajasthan is my childhood dream. I always have a fascination for the Rajput Kings in my school days. Who doesn't ?. I used to fantasize fighting on a horse back when I was a kid....
In spite of my having visited New Delhi a couple of times earlier I could not bring myself up to visiting Jaipur. Finally, I made it a point to visit Jaipur during a three week long official trip to Delhi. I visited Jaipur on my return journey from Delhi.

Jaipur is a small city with a number of tourist attractions enough palaces and forts to see for more than a week.Google will spew thousands of pages.
I had only a couple of days and fought hard to choose and see as many places as possible. But could cover only 50%, I guess.

Pink City- True to its name,Jaipur wears Pink all over it. These are a few interesting street shots of the Pink City.

Chokidhani

Yes...It is me with the Rajasthani Turban inside the dining hall with my friends Deepak and Preeti..
Both of them looked great with the turban..Flip thru the slideshow for their pictures with the turban.. Deepak really has posed great.. I got envious and camouflaged him inside the slideshow..(lol!)..!
Don't miss Preei the Rajasthani Village Girl... inside the slideshow..! Rajasthani Costumes are available for rent inside. There is an instant photographer service also..(not poloroid..! You get a professional print..)

This is very interesting place. A man made Ethinic Rajasthani Village, with all activities in a typical Rajasthani village are mimicked live. We went at about 9pm there and spent a couple of hours. But there is enough to spend a full evening. Cost for food is included in the entry fee that starts at Rs 300/-.There are other classes of food joints for which the cost is more where the crowd is less. I bought the default ticket to enjoy the crowded ambiance.

They have set up live shows of dances,Rope walking, Snake charming ... and the like. There are village shops, temple with priest who does pooja...and many more...! There is also an astrologer sitting under a tree who reads your palm,.. (It is a different matter altogether that his reading of my past was quite contrary to the truth..! My wife tells me ,predictions done during night are not effective..!)
It is a Ministry of Tourism enterprise. Visit their website - http://www.chokhidhani.com/village/index.html for more details. I didn't believe it is a Govt. of India enterprise. They sure have done a fantastic job.
Less said of this novel place is better ...See for yourself.the photos of this great place...!

Hawa Mahal - > Click here for PHOTOS

The Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of Winds, is arguably Jaipur’s best-known monument. For one, it is unlike any other Rajput monument – fort, palace or temple. Secondly, it’s a bit too whimsical and delicate, almost like a magical structure from the Arabian Nights. Despite its towering height and length, the Hawa Mahal looks like a light, airy structure which might blow away with the slightest wind.

Placed right in the middle of the bustling Johari Bazaar, near the Badi Chaupad (the big square), this reddish-pink building made of red sandstone is a constant reminder of Jaipur’s colourful history which refuses to just curl up and  die.
Alas we could not get inside and see as visitors were not allowed owing to the repair work that was in progress.  An excuse for me to visit this great city again...!

Shopping  -   Click here for PHOTOS
Just to forget the grief of not being able to enter Hawa Mahal ..We did some shopping just in front of Hawa Mahal...! I bought a couple of beautiful Sarees, Rajasthan Wall hangings and Bags.. My wife liked them all..The usual complaint that I paid more was not there this time...We had Preeti to do the bargaining..She is a very good bargainer..She would finish a bargaining session and start another immediately...!

Jantar Mantar - Colossal Observatory  (Click here for PHOTOS)

Jantar Mantar, built between 1728 and 1734, literally means the ‘instruments for measuring the harmony of the heavens’. Jai Singh, the brain behind the grand project, chose stone with marble facing. This was the biggest of all his observatories and the only one built of stone. He used it daily, often with his astronomy gurus Pandit Jagannath and Kewal Ram. In all there are 17 instruments in the Jantar Mantar complex. The function of each instrument is rather complex but serves a particular function where time plays the main theme.
wikipedia holds good amount of details of great monument..!

Click the picture below to have an enlarged view..and details of this observatory as engraved at the site..!

City Palace is near Jantar Mantar..We did not enter the city palace but took a few snaps from outside..!

Jaigarh Fort - Click here for PHOTOS
I actually wanted to visit Amber fort and landed in this place which turned out to be great. I could not visit the Amber fort. Will have to plan in the next visit.
Whenever Man Singh I (late 16th century) or his successors warred and won gold, silver, jewels and other booty, they hoarded them in the Jaigarh Fort. and they had the loyal Minas to fiercely guard their haul. (In fact, legends tell us that the Minas were such strict guards that they let each new Kachhawaha king to enter only once and pick one single piece for himself from the dazzling pile!) Anyway, all this treasure paid first for building Amber, then Jaipur and for centuries of lavish living. Indian Government officials tried to retrieve whatever was left; they dug the place in 1976 but found nothing. In fact they even drained the three arched water tanks (in a courtyard on the way to the northern end of the fort) in the hope of finding the fortune there. Some say that everything was used up in building Jaipur while others claim that it is still there somewhere.

The dictum of the ancient Hindu scriptures, the Puranas, 'a fort is the strength of a king', must have loomed large in the minds of the Rajputs while building the Jaigarh Fort. The ambitious Jai Singh II then expanded, remodelled and renamed it in 1726. and since this fort never fell in the hands of enemies, it stands almost intact to this day.

Main attractions in this fort are
Huge CanonWeighing 50 tons with an 8m barrel and a trajectory of about 20km, it is said to be the world's largest cannon on wheels.
Seven Storied Divya Burge from where areal view of Jaipur can be had (See the video)
The palace Complex - with public audience hall, Commanders meeting hall, Secret passages for royal escape in case of emergency, beautiful garden  and many more.
